MYOFUNCTIONAL THERAPY

Gentle orthodontics primarily, but not only for children. The only orthodontic treatment that addresses the causes, and that is the key to long-term success.

CAUSES BEHIND IRREGULAR TEETH

It is only given to few (10-20% of the population according to the literature) to be able to get a regular tooth, perfect denture.

In general, irregular teeth are not hereditary, but is due to the inadequate jaw (facial) growth on the one hand and the abnormal muscular forces on the other hand, which move the teeth into an undesirable position.

CONSEQUENCES OF IRREGULAR TOOTHING

Congestive teeth, dental occlusion disorders are not only aesthetic problems, but can also include chewing, sounding, postural disorders, and increased risk of caries due to more difficult cleaning.

HOW MANY CHILDREN ARE AFFECTED BY IRREGULAR TEETH?

According to recent research, more than 90% of children "develop" some kind of dental irregulation, which in many cases becomes apparent before the child's 5th birthday.

Myofunctional orthodontics provide an opportunity for an early, or even  primary dental-start, gentle, child-friendly treatment.

WHAT IS THE POINT OF MYOFUNCTIONAL ORTHODONTICS?

ELIMINATE THE CAUSES OF THE IRREGULARITIES (MOUTH BREATHING, IRREGULAR SWALLOWING ETC. )

WHY THERE IS NOT ENOUGH SPACE FOR PERMANENT TEETH?

Everyone has the genetic willingness to fit their own teeth in their own jaws. If this is not the case, then something prevented the development of the normal jaw (face). Usually the main cause is the tongue.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE TONGUE IN FACIAL DEVELOPMENT?

The good position of the tongue is on the palate  in a resting position and during swallowing also. This ensures that the upper teeth can fit in the jaw and it starts the upper jaw's normal growth by pressing it. If the tongue is not in its place, the jaw will be underdeveloped, the teeth will not fit in.

CAUSES BEHIND BAD TONGUE POSITION

PACIFIER,

THUMB SUCKING

MOUTH BREATHING (MOUTH IS OPEN, TONGUE FALLS DOWN)

BOTTLE FEEDING

HYPOTONY CAUSED BY LACK OF OXYGEN AT BIRTH (WEAK LIP AND TONGUE MUSCLES: MOUTH IS OPEN, TONGUE FALLS DOWN)

SHORT TONGUE FRENULUM, THAT PREVENTS THE TONGUE FROM POSITIONING PALATALLY

WHAT CAN CAUSE TEETH IRREGULARITY?

On Earth we can move an object from A to B by force. Teeth are no exception. Irregular muscle function around the teeth (lips, orcs, and tongue muscles) force the teeth into an unwanted position.

WHY DO THE MUSCLES FUNCTION IRREGULARLY?

Lack of breastfeeding, pacifiers, and thumb sucking both have a negative impact on muscle strength, the position of the tongue, and on the other hand, they promote the development of mouth breathing, tongue-swallowing, and sound formation, which generates new problems.

WHAT KIND OF DEVICES DOES THE MYOFUNCTIONAL ORTHODONTICS USE?

During the therapy we use the  Myobrace myofunctional trainers and orthodontics of the Myoresearch (Australia). The 25-year system is successfully used in more than 100 countries around the world.

Usually, 3 Myobrace devices are used in therapy, which in some cases need to be supplemented with other removable devices, for example, to expand the tooth.

HOW LONG DOES THE MYOFUNCTIONAL ORTHODONTICS TAKE?

If there are no major irregularities and the patient complies with the instructions for use (wearing time and mode), an average of 1.5 to 2 years of treatment is usual.

ONLY KIDS CAN USE MYOFUNCTIONAL DEVICES?

Myofunctional orthodontics by itself can be performed mainly during childhood, especially during the period of mixed teeth. The best way to go is 6-8 years old. In some cases, for example because of bulldog bites, it is advisable to start therapy even earlier in the dentition.

It can be used as an additional treatment at any age, it is even advisable to use it to restore functions.

COMPLEX THERAPY

The irregular teeth are the result of a multi-factor equation, so the therapy complexity should be adapted to this.

In our clinic, it is also true in case of orthodontics that the causes are treated for the fastest and long term stable results, whether in case of child or adult, removable or fixed devices. To do this, we also work with more speialists, allergist, orthopedist, speech therapist and physiotherapist.

AT WHAT AGE SHOULD WE EXAMINE THE POTENTIAL PROBLEMS AND START THE TREATMENT?

Normally, around 5-6 years of age, and in the case of significant irregularities that are noticable for the parent also, it is worth looking at the child's teeth from an orthodontic point of view earlier. Treatment can also be started at this age.
