BRUXISM

(TOOTH GRINDING)

BRUXISM (TOOTH GRINDING)

Bruxism is not a disease but a phenomenon, a response. If we have a long, intensive, long-lasting grinding, it will also degrade the quality of life and contribute to various diseases. The two main types are daytime and nighttime grinding. The former takes about 20% of the cases, and it is more difficult to treat.

WHY DO WE GRIND OUR TEETH?

The tooth grinding is basically due to two reasons.

  • Stress: Stress-induced "experiences" during the day are revived in our dreams, and we respond to it with bruxism.

  • Bad tooth contact: Unbalanced contact between the lower and upper teeth also leads to tooth grinding and crushing.

IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TOOTH GRINDING AND TIGHTENING?

In fact, both are bruxism, only difference is that one of them is static and the other is the movement of the jaws.

FOR HOW MUCH TIME AND WHAT FORCE CAN WE GRIND OUR TEETH?

Huge forces awaken at this time and the tightness can sometimes last for several minutes at a time. A tooth grinder is able to break his/her teeth at gum level!

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF NIGHTTIME BRUXISM?

As it is a night-time bruxism, some of the symptoms are logically the strongest after the morning awakening. Symptoms may include:

  • repeated awakening without reason

  • tired awakening, lethargy

  • neck, shoulder, back and lower back pain

  • morning headache

  • clipping chewing joint

  • tooth wear

  • broken teeth

  • arm numbness

  • possibly migraine

  • tinnitus of unknown origin

  • facial pain of unknown origin

TREATMENT OF BRUXISM

Our bruxism specialist has developed a special procedure for treating tooth grinding, the first step of which is to eliminate the symptoms. This is achieved by the use of a special miniature bite lifting rail, which is not primarily aimed at raising the bite, but at activating the mouth opening reflex. In this way, when our front teeth collide, the reflex mentioned above starts and the tooth is not grinded. To be able to work well, you need to be able to set up the device, which requires special knowledge. The final setting can take 3-4 occasions, but usually the change is significant and the recovery is more relaxed even after the first time.

The goal, however, is the ultimate solution to make the patient sleep well and without symptoms - without the device also. This requires balancing the bite, balancing the dental contact, which occurs after a facebow bite registration with masticatory muscle relaxation.

Bite registration with masticatory muscle relaxation gives an idea of where early dental contact is and how it needs to be adjusted  so that contact becomes even.
